Usage:

Sodium molybdate (Na₂MoO₄·2H₂O) is the most widely used molybdenum source for agricultural and industrial applications. Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential micronutrient required for two critical enzyme systems: nitrate reductase (converts NO₃⁻ to NH₄⁺ for protein synthesis) and nitrogenase (enables nitrogen fixation in legume root nodules).

Agricultural applications:

  • Legumes (soybean, clover, alfalfa): Molybdenum is critical for Rhizobium nitrogen fixation; even mild Mo deficiency significantly reduces biological N fixation and yield
  • Brassicas (cauliflower, broccoli): Most susceptible to Mo deficiency — causes “whiptail” disorder in cauliflower where leaves fail to develop properly
  • Seed treatment: Ultra-low application rates (50–100 g Mo/ha) as a seed dip or coating provide season-long supply
  • Foliar spray: 0.1–0.5 g/L solution for rapid deficiency correction
  • Soil application: 100–200 g/ha sodium molybdate for season-long molybdenum supply

Industrial applications:

  • Corrosion inhibitor in cooling water systems and closed-loop industrial water circuits
  • Catalyst component in petroleum refining (hydrotreating processes)
  • Metal surface treatment and molybdate conversion coatings

Applications

Sodium molybdate serves multiple critical roles in agriculture and industry. In legume cultivation, it is essential for the enzyme nitrogenase, which catalyses biological nitrogen fixation by rhizobium bacteria in root nodules — making it indispensable for sustainable soybean, alfalfa, and clover production. In cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage, molybdenum deficiency causes “whiptail” — a severe malformation of leaves that reduces yield. As a foliar spray, rates as low as 50–100 g/ha of sodium molybdate are typically sufficient. In the chemical industry, sodium molybdate is a key component of corrosion inhibitor formulations used in closed cooling water systems, replacing more toxic chromate inhibitors. It is also used as a catalyst in the production of formaldehyde and as a pigment precursor in ceramic glazes. Molybdenum is one of the least required micronutrients (crop requirement typically < 0.1 kg/ha), making EDTA or sodium salt forms highly cost-effective.
